Gerardo Morantes
Improvising an anthropomorphic being, Instrumento Homínido interconnects the vocal apparatus with 14th St. pipelines to reflect how humans internalize unnatural systems of “civility,” and intervene in them to reconnect life to expanded forms of existence.
This instrument-organ marches through a philosophical allegory: from the cavern of Homo habilis, through Homo erectus skyscrapers, and the sapient automaton-citizen. Using voice and footstep-as-drum, Plato’s Cave returns through historical repetition, and the “Universal Man” finally listens the call, transforming the line into a cyclical rhyme toward a “primitive” return: an ancestral future.

About the Artist(s)
Born in Venezuela, Gerardo Morantes is a site-specific, intervention, movement artist whose work is rooted in the body’s capacity to informs and challenge public space, urban design, architecture. He has an Arts Agency degree from The University of Puerto Rico and moves along with PISO Proyecto, a performance and somatic platform for embodied experimental movement.
