Yapci Ramos
“yo, Guirre” is a performance that brings two ancestral practices originated on the Canary Island of La Gomera to the streets of New York: Silbo Gomero, a language based on whistling, and Salto del Pastor (shepherd’s leap), a form of movement using a particular tool called an astia. For centuries, both techniques have made possible to navigate the island’s complex terrain, facilitating communication and movement among its inhabitants. Transposed to New York, the action is presented as an anti-futurist utopia in which ancestral techniques that have survived colonization can be reclaimed as alternative ways of one’s own relating to the territory.
