Raquel Du Toit, Ryan Maloney
Requiem for a Nap is a 15-minute movement and live music performance about the disappearance and return of the afternoon nap. Drawing from Raquel Du Toit’s childhood in Guadalajara, Mexico, where families traditionally rested after the main meal of the day, the performance begins as Raquel emerges from the subway at 14th Street and 8th Avenue, lays out a sheet, and falls into an improvised dream in the middle of Manhattan. Accompanied by saxophonist Ryan Maloney’s dreamlike score, her sleeping body tosses, twitches, settles, awakens, and ultimately returns to the street.

Raquel Du Toit is a Mexican-American performance artist, curator, and cultural worker whose work explores rest, labor, care, and cultural memory. Her work has been presented at the Queens Museum, Bronx Museum, and internationally. Ryan Maloney is a NYC-based saxophonist, composer, educator, and cultural worker exploring improvisation, jazz history, and experimental sound.
