Refuge is an inhabitable and interactive installation made from discarded beach umbrellas and a social experiment. The installation references provisional spaces used as emergency refuge by people displaced by climate disaster as well as repurposed urban, public spaces—often libraries–that temporarily serve as heating and cooling centers during extreme temperatures. The Refuge is a third space with free stuff where you can rest, share stories, experiment with a somatic cooling protocol, and leave behind any climate trauma you’re carrying with you.

Nora Almeida is an urban swimmer, performance artist, and printmaker based in Lenapehoking. Her embodied research and performance practice explores ecology, emergency, and autonomy. She facilitates collaborative experiments to transform spaces and how people feel in them using site-specific installations, performances, oral histories, participatory media making, and field work.
